Prevent Automatic Switching to Mobile Data

Modern smartphones are designed to prioritize a "constant connection." If the Wi-Fi signal in your student accommodation fluctuates common during peak hours or while moving between rooms your phone may silently drop the Wi-Fi and switch to your mobile data plan.

 

How to Disable "Wi-Fi Assist" (iOS)

Apple devices use a feature called Wi-Fi Assist to boost poor signals with cellular data.

  1. Here's how to disable Wi-Fi Assist on your iPhone or iPad:
  2. Open the Settings app on your device
  3. Scroll down and tap Mobile Data
  4. Scroll all the way down to the bottom of the Mobile Data settings page
  5. You'll see Wi-Fi Assist with a toggle switch next to it
  6. Tap the toggle to turn it off (the switch will turn from green to grey)

 

How to Disable "Smart network Switch" (for most Android phones):

  1. Open Settings
  2. Go to Connections (or Network & Internet)
  3. Tap Wi-Fi
  4. Tap the three-dot menu icon (⋮) in the top right corner
  5. Select Advanced or Intelligent Wi-Fi
  6. Look for Switch to mobile data or Auto network switch
  7. Toggle it off
