Modern smartphones are designed to prioritize a "constant connection." If the Wi-Fi signal in your student accommodation fluctuates common during peak hours or while moving between rooms your phone may silently drop the Wi-Fi and switch to your cellular plan.
Apple devices use a feature called Wi-Fi Assist to boost poor signals with cellular data.
Open Settings and tap Cellular (or Mobile Data).
Scroll to the very bottom of the page (past all your apps).
Toggle Wi-Fi Assist to OFF.
Note: Steps may vary slightly depending on your manufacturer (Samsung, Pixel, etc.).
Open Settings and go to Connections > Wi-Fi.
Tap the three dots (⋮) or "Intelligent Wi-Fi" / "Wi-Fi Preferences".
Locate "Switch to mobile data" or "Adaptive Wi-Fi."
Toggle the switch to OFF.
